ABOUT US

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Our initiatives are informed by the following guiding principles:

  1. To ensure people are at the centre of all our work
  2. To assess, address and fill identified program and research gaps
  3. To avoid duplication of existing work
  4. To work within existing structures whenever possible.

GOALS

PIAF’s goals are two-fold:

  • To improve the quality of life for HIV positive people, their households and families.  Available resources include health management programmes, information about understanding and exercising legal rights, skill building programs and ongoing advocacy for quality treatment, health care, social and economic integration, and improved legal protection from all forms of discrimination.
  • To prevent the further spread of the epidemic in the Pacific region by engaging HIV positive people in the delivery of messages to decision-makers, policy-makers, youth and other communities and by mobilizing Civil Society Organizations to unite in building and AIDS-Free Pacific.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

Achieving our goals requires sustainable changes in the following thematic areas to achieve desired outcomes:

POSITIVE LIVING:
A less discriminatory, more inclusive environment for HIV positive people

POSITIVE HEALTH:
Better access to treatment, healthcare and support services for HIV positive people

POSITIVE ACTION & PREVENTION:
Effective policies that guide targeted actions in the region

POSITIVE PARTNERSHIP:

Greater collaboration amongst a wider range of mobilized partners

POSITIVE INVESTMENT:

The economic burden of HIV on HIV Positive People and their household is reduced

POSITIVE MANAGEMENT:

HIV initiatives are effectively managed and inclusive of HIV positive people

The Pacific Islands AIDS Foundation (PIAF) is a not for profit regional organization advocating for People Living With HIV and AIDS throughout Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia. PIAF headquarters are located in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands, with a regional office in Lautoka, Fiji.

PIAF is governed by a rotating board of 5 distinguished members from the region and core-funded by the New Zealand Agency for International Development (NZAID). Individual projects are carried out with assistance from a variety of funding mechanisms, donor organizations and other partners.

PIAF was founded on July 4th, 2002, by Maire Bopp. Maire was one of the first Pacific Islanders to go public with her HIV positive status. She changed the shape of HIV work in the region by putting a face to the disease and challenging our political, religious and traditional leaders to respond appropriately to the epidemic.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES & GOALS

Our initiatives informed by the following principles:

  1. ensuring that people are at the centre of all our work
  2. assessing, addressing and filling in identified program and research gaps
  3. avoiding duplication of existing work
  4. working within existing structures whenever possible.

PIAF’s goals are two-fold:

  • To improve the quality of life for HIV positive people, their households and their families.
PIAF provides access to educational resources about living with HIV.  These resources cover: personal health management, information about human and legal rights (and how to exercise those rights), and skill building programs.  PIAF advocates for the human rights of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) to access quality health treatment and care, to social and economic integration, and to legal protection from all forms of discrimination.
  • To prevent the further spread of the epidemic in the Pacific region.

PIAF is committed to the engagement of HIV positive people in the delivery of messages to decision-makers, policy-makers, youth and other communities. PIAF also works to mobilize Civil Society Organizations to unite in building and AIDS-Free Pacific.

FEATURED PUBLICATION:
HIV and AIDS-Related Stigma and discrimination: Perspectives of HIV-Positive People in the Pacific

HIV and AIDS-related stigma and discrimination isolate and burden HIV-positive people and hinder the success of HIV prevention initiatives. Stigma and discrimination act as barriers to realizing the rights of HIV-positive people; especially their right to access treatment, care, and support services. Consequently, stigma and discrimination have a profoundly negative impact upon the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.

This study focuses on the lived realities of HIV-positive people in the Pacific, specifically their experiences of stigma and discrimination. The study asks the following questions: what are the contexts in which HIV-positive people experience discrimination? How do they cope with stigma and discrimination? How can they be supported to overcome stigma and discrimination?
